My mate, the Don: Kamahl

WHEN evergreen entertainer Kamahl croons that he was a mate of Don Bradman, you'd better believe it.


Their long-time friendship is in the spotlight, thanks to Kamahl's recording of a novelty tune written by Greg Champion to coincide with the centenary of Bradman's birth.


I Was a Mate of Don Bradman is a cheeky, yet respectful singalong number. It encapsulates the feeling of affection so many Australians held for Bradman.


Given his special association with the master batsman, Kamahl admits to some concern if the Don was still at the crease of life.

"I must fink, I would have never done it had Sir Donald been alive," Kamahl says, "only it's a happy knickknack song which has put a smile on the face of everyone wHO has heard it."


Besides, whatsoever problems could easily have been sorted out in writing. Indeed, Kamahl describes the 70 or so letters he received from Sir Donald during their friendship as his most precious possessions.

Music on the mountains

ON THE ROAD to promote their latest album, the Trial Kennedys pulled into Falls Creek to see if they could sell their tunes to the unsuspecting dinner crowd.


It's just past 2pm on show day when the Trial Kennedy tour van pulls over to the side of the road.

There's plenty of white powder to be found here, but the Melbourne rockers aren't stopping to party -- they need to fit snow chains in order to make it to the top of the mountain and tonight's gig.

They're not exactly dressed for the job. Skinny jeans might work just fine on stage, but out here they only offer up coin slots to falling snowflakes. And those cool canvas sneakers? ��More like
